Canada briefly reopens embassy in Haiti as Canadians still stuck in riot-stricken nation

The Canadian Embassy has briefly reopened in Haiti after closing last week due to violent protests in the streets.

The announcement comes as many Canadians are still stuck in the Caribbean nation. The political unrest has created chaos in the streets of Port-Au-Prince making it too dangerous for travellers to head from their hotel to the airport. Click to expand

In a tweet posted Monday, the embassy said it will be open for consular services Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. local time, with limited staff.

The visa section should also be back to regular hours Tuesday, it added.

Haiti has been gripped by political violence and unrest as demonstrators call for the resignation of President Jovenal Moise over skyrocketing inflation and a scandal over oil imports.

The Canadians trapped in Haiti have included missionaries, medical personnel, tourists and students. Many have been slowly making their way to the airport via helicopter or, in some cases, dangerous road journeys.
